THERE is no law against possessing a BB gun but it is an offence to possess an imitation firearm with the aim of making someone believe that unlawful violence will be used against them.

Improper use of BB guns might also lead to assault or even grievous bodily harm charges. All of these offences carry possible prison sentences.

People brandishing the weapons in a way that fools police into believing they are in possession of a real gun run the risk of being shot by firearms officers. A Taser might also be used.

A Gwent Police spokeswoman urged parents to think carefully before buying BB guns and make sure their children use them "sensibly and responsibly".

"We believe the Argus will be helpful in ensuring a sensible debate takes place over the availability and use of BB guns," she added.

"Such a debate is essential if we are to ensure public safety and confidence."

She added that because of the wide range of crimes in which BB guns could be involved, from criminal damage to assault, it was "extremely difficult" to determine the number of incidents in which they have been involved in recent years.
