FORTUNES ebbed and flowed in the Westmorland FA Senior Cup as North Lancashire League side Kirkby Lonsdale pulled out the stops to see off Westmorland League opponents Sedbergh Wanderers with a 5-2 win after extra time.

Kirkby had to claw their way back into this quarter-final tie after Sedbergh set the pace from the first whistle to boss the first half and lead 2-0 at the interval.

Goals from Luke Hackman and an own goal from Kirkby's Steve Chapman put Sedbergh into a great position, but Kirkby got their game together after the break and created a number of chances.

After his earlier blunder, Chapman got Kirkby back into contention with a superb strike.

Kirkby piled on the pressure but the resilient Sedbergh defence kept them at bay until the second minute of stoppage when Kirkby's Andy Metcalfe supplied a well-deserved equaliser.

Kirkby seemed to relish extra time more and Yaffa Bojang showed his silky skills to score a glorious goal to put his side into a 3-2 lead.

As Sedbergh heads started to drop, Kirkby increased the tempo and Kevin Cowin made the game safe with a fourth.

Dynamic midfielder Brian Pennington added a fifth to ensure Kirkby moved into the semi-finals.

Milnthorpe Corinthians won through with a 2-1 win over Kendal Celtic, who belied their position as underdogs by taking the West Lancs League side to extra time.

Corinthians' goals came from a Chris Vincent header from a corner and an Adam Pashley shot from 20 yards that went in off the underside of the bar.

Wetheriggs United moved safely through by outpointing Appleby in a 4-0 victory, while the tie between Keswick and Kendal County was postponed because of a frozen pitch and is scheduled to take place this Saturday.

Windermere reserve-team player Liam Fox had a memorable first-team debut, the 17-year-old hitting a hat-trick to help his side cruise to an important 7-1 league victory at Greystoke on Saturday.

The result was seen as a "make or break" one for Windermere's league campaign and lifts them up to fifth, only a point behind and with a match in hand of fourth-placed Keswick.

Burneside in third place have played several matches more and are within Windermere's sights, says team boss Steve Jenkinson, and even a tilt at the runners-up spot is not unrealistic if they can maintain the form.

Greystoke were rocked on their heels when Fox sidefooted into an empty goal after five minutes and almost immediately was put away by Adam Thwaites to finish a break down the left with a shot across the keeper into the far bottom corner.

Striking partner Jamie Parkinson worked a great bit of play with Fox before the teenager powered another well-struck shot into the near top corner.

Windermere went 4-0 up through a Callum Thwaites penalty and although Greystoke pulled one back, Parkinson found the target with a back-post header from a corner.

For good measure, Thwaites turned provider with a free kick to the back post for Chris Barton to volley home.

Parkinson completed the scoring with the seventh by firing into the far top corner after another good run.

Other second-teamers played a part for the visitors and left midfielder Grant Robinson was man of the match, while veteran Mike Dobson did a fine job standing in at right full back.

Lunesdale United sprang a surprise with a 6-4 defeat of Coniston in the first division And it was an unexpected hat-trick from Carl Horner that helped third-from-bottom Lunesdale on their way to an excellent three points.

Horner has stepped up from the Reserves this season to play in the back four, but with players returning he was pressed into action wide out in midfield and repaid the faith with three goals.

Back-to-form Lunesdale caught Coniston cold and had stormed into a 4-1 lead by half time. The home team pulled another goal back after the break, but Lunesdale struck two more to lead 6-2 before two late goals reduced the final winning margin.

In addition's to Horner's three, striker Johnny Lowis scored twice, including a penalty and Chris Ellwood also netted, again from the spot.

Burneside travelled to Northbank knowing they were in for a strong physical encounter at Carlisle and that is what they got in a 2-0 defeat.

Burneside were caught napping in the second minute as Northbank's right winger reached the byeline for a cross which was headed home unchallenged.

Two shots on goal from Martin O'Sullivan well saved and Tom Selby was foiled in a one-on-one.

Burneside conceded a second goal midway through the first half from a well-taken corner which dropped at the back post for a Northbank boot to slot home.

Good build-up work from visitors in the second half was denied by a string of saves from the Northbank keeper. And when he was beaten late on Martin Willan's low strike rebounded off the post.

Northbank relied upon breakaway attacks in the second half which were well cut out by Chris Howson and Chris Dixon, but the Carlisle side had their noses ahead a resolute and physical performance kept the visitors at bay.

Burneside Reserves progressed to the semi-final of the Peter Daws Cup with goals from Shaun Atkinson and a Dean McNeil penalty. Keeper Paul McCullock made some outstanding saves Westmorland FA U18s found West Riding FA visitors too strong as they went down 7-1.
