Pupils from Farnborough Primary School paid a visit to Sainsbury's store at Locksbottom.
The youngsters learned about the packaging used on items, how it is disposed of and how much of it is recycled.
The 22 pupils from Year 5 spent time examining various items but paid special attention to the packaging of the Easter eggs.
The weight of each product was noted, the different kinds of packaging used depending on the product and how the store deals with all the cardboard that has to be disposed of.
After seeing the machines that crush the cardboard and turn it into large bales before they are sent off for recycling, acting head teacher Deirdre Harrison said she was impressed to see that the amount of packaging used on the shop floor was less compared to her visit with the school last year.
The machines were demonstrated by store trainers Bev Carter and Allison Sims who rounded off the visit by providing refreshments plus a chocolate egg for everyone to take back to school.
