Historic finds unearthed by metal detectorists across Essex have been declared as treasure.

Several objects were discovered by Americans who have spent their holidays metal detecting in the county, an inquest hearing at Chelmsford was told.

Coroner Caroline Beasley-Murray ruled all the finds were classed as treasure, meaning the finds are set to be acquired by museums with the discoverers in line for a reward based on the object's value.

Items found in the north Essex area over the last year included a post-medieval gold finger ring unearthed in the Boxted area by Patrick Conlon.

Christy Wissinger, of Pennsylvania, USA, found a post-medieval silver button while detecting north of Colchester. It was stamped with conjoined hands above paired hearts and dated from the late 17th century.

A fellow American, Mr Zschernitz, of Illinoise, found a post-medieval silver hat badge in the Tendring area.

It featured the Virgin Mother and child on a crescent moon, and would have been worn by men between 1500 and 1525.

A gold finger ring was found north of Colchester by Mr Bailey, of New Hampshire, USA.

It dated from the late 15th or early 16th century, showing God holding Christ on the cross and also featured a floral design representing the wounds of Christ.
