It's time to get out those flares and pull on your platform shoes as Boogie Nights has come to the New Wimbledon Theatre to kick off its tenth anniversary tour, writes Andrew Westbrook.

Ex-boyband star Antony Costa leads the cast in this unashamedly cheesy 70s spectacular, which promises to "have you dancing in your seats, in the aisles and all the way home".

Indeed, even on a Monday night, not one usually known for its rowdy crowds, anyone resisting the groove and staying in their chairs would have missed chunks of the performance as most of the audience felt the need to get up and dance. They were put in the mood no doubt by an enthusiastic warm-up set from Heart FM DJ Toby Anstis.

The musical is about a group of friends, their lives, and their loves. There may well be a storyline in there somewhere, but its main purpose is to help link one disco classic with another, something that most of the audience seemed more than happy with.

And for those who don't consider a trimmer Costa, fresh from an eight-month West End run in Blood Brothers, enough of a draw, there's also something special for the more mature fans in Alvin Stardust, who plays the former Blue singer's dad.

While Costa, who is well cast as cheeky lad Roddy, revealed a few first night nerves at times, Stardust proved he is a seasoned pro, taking the occasional "get your kit off" heckle in his stride.

But the real surprise is Nick Bailey, recognised by most for when he played the straight-laced Dr Anthony Trueman in Eastenders. His superb performance, most memorably in one sketch mimicking Shaft, is in such contrast to what he is best remembered for that it is a real highlight of the show.

Set largely within the Boogie Nights club night, the show essentially moves from set-piece to set-piece as it works its way through all the disco classics, such as We Are Family, YMCA and Play That Funky Music, while tipping its hat to other cultural landmarks of the time, like Happy Days.

So for any disco divas out there, Boogie Nights should be the show for you.

Boogie Nights is at New Wimbledon Theatre until Saturday, February 17. For tickets call 0870 060 6646 or visit newwimbledontheatre.co.uk.
