ONE of the biggest Marlow May Fayres in the event's 22-year history took place over the weekend with more than 1,000 revellers packing Higginson Park.

The day was so successful that for the first time the event which has always been run on a break even basis made money.

The Marlow Round Table, the fundraising group who organised the day, now have £500 to give to good causes in and around the town.

Duncan Trapp, one of the event organisers, said: "It was an extremely popular day. One of our chaps who has been involved for more years than he cares to remember said he couldn't recall a busier May Fayre.

"We were very pleased with the turn out."

In stark contrast to last year's hail storms and thunder clouds this year's event was blessed with blue skies and high temperatures.

Visitors enjoyed a raffle, a performance of My Fair Lady by the Maidenhead-based Redroofs Theatre School, an appearance by the Chitty Chitty Bang Bang film car and an opening ceremony conducted by ex Goodie Tim Brooke-Taylor.

Mr Trapp added: "The highlight was the It's a Knock Out Tournament between local schools.

"It is the first time we have staged something like that and we got some great feedback."
