A FARMER from Fordingbridge has nothing to beef about after getting a grant which will enable her to keep meat fresher.

Jackie Haugh who, with her father Martin Westlake, keeps a 30-plus animal herd of Welsh Black suckler beef cattle at Six Acre Farm, has recently won a £2,900 grant towards a £6,900 chiller.

The Forest Friendly Farming Business Grant Scheme money came from the EU Leader+ programme and South East England Development Agency via the South Hampshire Enterprise Agency. New Forest Commoners Mr Westlake and his daughter have been building up the herd since 1998. The calves stay with their mothers "until the mums kick them off", said Jackie.

The cattle are free-range and are left to graze the New Forest at will during the summer.
