READING last week's Asian View column, I was surprised to see reported that the Prime Minister of Azad Kashmir had visited High Wycombe to drum-up support for the Labour Party.
He was asking Wycombe residents of Kashmiri descent to vote for the Labour candidate in last Thursday's general election.
I had always thought that the Labour Party, like the other main parties in this country, was against foreign intervention in British elections.
It also appears somewhat patronising, if he was accurately reported, for the prime minister to assume that these residents have no views of their own regarding which candidate they thought was best for them and for Britain.
To be told to vote for one particular candidate just because his ethnic origin is the same as yours is an insult to the electors of Wycombe.
As I know from my contacts with many members of the Kashmiri community in High Wycombe, many are supporters of the Conservative party and I dare say some even support the Liberal Democrats.
I hope the day never comes in this country where people are elected for their ethnic origin rather than for their political beliefs and policies.
