I NOTED with interest the letter from Michael O'Neill on Bin Collections, and the spillage problems associated therewith, in the January 11 issue of the Penarth Times - particularly appropriate on this stormy weekend.

Living as I do on what appears to be Fox Highway No1 and Sea Gull Rendezvous Alpha, Penarth, I long ago tired of this problem, so I made a portable rubbish bag holder.

All you need is a bit of rigid but flexible plastic about 30 inches (0.76m) wide and 66 inches (1.68m) long. Tape the two ends together to form a tube about 20 inches in diameter.

Fix a loop/piece of rope at one end to anchor it to a fence or other solid object; stand the tube up on end and place inside one or two plastic bin bags.

The animals of the night find it unassailable as does the wind.

If plastic sheet is not available, four pieces of 3 ply wood sheeting 30 inches by 20 inches square, joined with small/ piano hinges along the vertical joints, will make an excellent folding version for ready storage.

Best seal the plywood with waterproof paint or varnish - for all-weather durability.

Of course, you could always ask the Council to supply wheelie bins, but perhaps that's all a bit too logical and simple for our lot.
