IT is described as an oasis in an area where poverty, depression, and isolation can unfortunately be a way of life.

Colbayns Community Centre regularly helps more than 1,500 children and 700 families across Tendring.

And it shows what strides a community can make when it pulls together.

The centre started from humble beginnings with a few clubs and amenities to make life easier for residents.

But it has snowballed to provide dozens of courses, clubs, activities and facilities.

Admittedly, cash is needed to kick-start projects like this but the most important ingredient is willpower.

Residents have answered the call to get involved and now the centre offers everything from multiple birth clubs to literacy classes.

But the ambitious centre could become of its own success as it needs more for volunteers to keep up with its popularity.

Will the community step up to the latest challenge?

We certainly hope so.

And we can only hope the authorities are taking note of the centre's achievements.

But the Clacton ward is by no means the only area in Tendring that needs an oasis like this.

We can only hope those in power see how successful the centre is and support similar facilities across the district.

This week's Clacton edition highlights the plight of Great Britain team athlete Cameron Lloyd, 16, who needs sponsorship to take part in the world transplant games in Thailand.

Cameron has won gold for this country already and it would be a great shame if the £6,000 he needs cannot be raised.
