IN recent times it seems that Northwich is struggling to keep up with the competition.

We have seen many stores closing or relocating due to high rent and rates and lack of trade. The town centre is dotted with derelict, shabby, empty units and overgrown wasteland.

And let's face it, Northwich post 4pm is an embarrassment. The place is a ghost town.

It would seem then, that our very own council would want to be in a position to help out those traders who still open up in Northwich and have to face the dwindling numbers?

It comes to me as a shock to hear proposals soon to be strictly enforced by Cheshire County Council planning will see the removal of all street A-boards, all external displays - think shoe shops, shop with no name, greengrocers, etc, and all tables and chairs outside food establishments.

Those wishing to do any of the above will need to apply for planning permission from Vale Royal Borough Council (£265 cost) and apply for an alfresco' licence from the council at £450 per annum.

It is clear that not only will some businesses not bother putting their wares outside but many will not be able to afford to sign up.

The area from the high street to the top end of town is as much as 18m across and is fully pedestrianised. Imagine this space without boards and displays. It will look like a ghost town from 9am instead of 4pm.

Northwich Vision may be the future of the town but is as much as 10 years away and we need focus on the next three to five years as well.

And the council says it is helping traders in Northwich?

The above situation is real, it is happening now. If you are planning on having your lunch in the sunshine in Northwich this summer, don't count on it!

Don't let the bigwigs kill Northwich.
