Haven Angling Group: The Club held the first points match of the year last Sunday with 30 members, both new and old, making the most of the gap in the weather to turn out for the occassion.

With only a stiff breeze and no rain the conditions were very favourable, the only down side was the fact that there was an ebbing tide which is usually not conjucive to good catches.

The first win of the year went to Joe The Carpet' Thomas, whose bag of six fish were all of different species, and included a nice strap Conger Eel. Together with weight the catch netted Joe a total of 28 points, giving him the satisfaction of at least heading the league table on at least one occassion. Not only did Joe win the £25 prize, but he also won the members' draw of £10, and to complete a successful day won a £5 tackle voucher in the raffle - not a bad start to the year.

Second place went to last year's runner-up champion angler Mike The Traveller' Hallam, who seems determined to make the crown his own this year. Mike weighed in with a fine bag of six fish containing four different species also giving him a total of 28 points, but unfortunately for Mike it lacked the weight of Joe's catch.

Third place went to Sheila Sear (nee Witts), who after being absent from the scene for 12 months due to getting married and moving house etc, decided where her priorities lay and dusted her fishing tackle and decided to get down to business. There was certainly no sign of rustiness as she showed when she produced a bag of four fish, three of which were nice strap congers, which gave her a total of 25 points.

Top junior spot went to young Shaun Williams - son of Sprayer', who showed that he was a chip off the old block, when he weighed in with a couple of nice fish to give himself a total of 12 points.

The prize for the heaviest fish of the day unbelievably went to Martin Tommo' Thompson, who managed to stay awake to land a fine double figure bull huss. Tommo also weighed in with a specimen pollack.

Thanks again to Edgy and Sue of the Avondale Hotel, who had a hot plate of bangers and mash awaiting the members on their return Full results: 1 Joe Thomas 28 points (won £25); 2 Mike Hallam 28 points (won £15); 3. Shaila Sear 25 points (won £10); Top Junior: Shaun Williams (won £5); Heaviest Fish: Martin Thompson (won £12).
