Braintree Town fell to a disappointing 2-0 defeat at title-chasing Histon on Tuesday night.
Manager George Borg opted to play with a five-man midfield, but the decision backfired as the Iron fell two goals down before half-time.
Despite a tactical change at the break, forced in part by a nasty injury to Louis Riddle, the visitors were unable to find a way back into the game at the Glassworld Stadium.
The victory took Histon back to the top of the table, while Welling's 1-0 win at Dorchester pushed Iron out of the play-off places and into sixth.
The Iron will hope for better luck when they return to action at home to Lewes on Saturday.
