True stories of an Edmonton witch and saint are revealed in the latest play produced by Face Front Inclusive Theatre and created and performed by their cross-generational group InterACTion.

Determined and the Dammed is based on the story of two real women from Edmonton’s history; Elizabeth Sawyer who lived 400 years ago and was accused of witchcraft and Gladys Aylward a working class missionary from the 20th Centuary.

The group researched through historical archives, books and internet sites and the devising process was an open sharing of artistic ideas, views and interpretations of the research material within the entire group.

The group's members range in age from 11 to 90 years old and are of a diverse mix of race, background and ability.

Here two of them, Luke Ricketts, 23 and Hatice Ivecen,18, explain what being part of InterACTion means to them:

Luke says “As a student of the arts, after my education had finished, I wanted to look for somewhere that I could contribute my skills and abilities. I had already known of Face Front and knew some of what they did, so for me it was my first port of call and a chance to put what I’ve learned into real practice.

"Face Front Theatre in my honest opinion, is a true leader in inclusive performance. It is plain to see in their latest show Determined and the Dammed- a show that brings together on stage people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds then gives them the opportunity to perform and in a way that best suits each individual.

"Face Front puts the needs of its members first, making sure they are in an environment that each person is most comfortable with. That is what makes a show great, when the actors are at their best, the show is too. Also for the members, it’s not just a chance to act - that is the reason why they attend - but it is a way to have social interaction with others, a thing that for some is something that they would not otherwise have. For others, it's a chance to learn the skills and get the experience to become a professional actor.

"As a performer and a student, I have come to learn that InterACTion is a very multi-functioning and multi-capable group. Everyone has their own personalities and views but everyone is able to perform and interact with one another in perfect harmony and friendship.

"Every week we are getting closer and closer to completing our play. It is very fun and exciting just to be in rehearsal because everyone is so friendly and nice.”

Hatice says: “I first came to Face Front when I was 14 and if a person had said before then that I would be in a group with a bunch of old people and adults I would have said 'you have got to be joking!'

"But I can’t tell you how amazing the group is, we have so much fun and get the chance to perform in great plays that we write ourselves and there's music too!

"Everyone is always treated as equals and we always make sure no one is feeling left out. We want our members to feel safe and happy when they come to the session each week.

"For me the play is looking amazingly well. I’m very pleased with everyone in our group they have made an incredible effort in every rehearsal and I’m sure will do on show nights as well.”
