A 77-year-old woman had her bible and bag snatched as she walked home from church last night.

Police are appealing for information after a man ran up to the woman as she was walking down Morley Avenue in Wood Green at 11.45pm, grabbing her bag and pulling her to the floor.

The suspect ran off with the bag, which contained the woman's bible, along Salisbury Road.

He is described as a black male, 5ft 10ins tall between the age of 30 and 40, of medium build and wearing dark clothing.

A member of the public called the police and ambulance service after the incident and the victim was taken to hospital with back pain. She remains there as a precaution.

Detective Inspector Jason Turkington of Haringey police said: "This was a depraved attack on a clearly vulnerable member of our community. I appeal to anyone with information to contact us.”

Anyone with any information about the incident are being urged to get in contact with police.
