A theatre company has been given money to help uncover the history of a little-known underground river.

The Twisted Stocking Theatre has been given a £50,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund for the nine-month project to raise awareness of the historical importance of the River Moselle.

The company will be looking at the 250-year heritage of the river, which runs mainly underground from the west to the east of the borough, as part of the A River Runs Through It project

Schools and volunteers from across Haringey will be taking part in the project, which will include craft workshops in which people will be able to share their memories of the river.

Twisted Stocking Theatre project leader Angela Baker said: “I’m proud to have got this vote of confidence. The project will fly the Moselle flag, so that we can all enjoy its extraordinary heritage.”

Last year part of the river in the Lordship Recreation Ground, in Lordship Lane, Tottenham was cleared and restored.

The theatre has been working in the borough for the last 15 years and delivers interactive arts projects in schools and with community groups.
