A Salsa dance teacher has started to host parties to raise money for children’s charities.

Sureka Fernando, of Moselle Avenue, Wood Green, runs Salsa with Sureka, which organises events to give people an introduction to London’s Salsa scene while raising money for good causes.

The mother said people who attend are offered a discounted meal and discounted entrance into a Salsa club in exchange for making a donation to the chosen charity.

She said: “It started because I wanted to give my students a taste of an authentic experience of the Salsa scene.

“But the idea to raise money came after the birth of my daughter who is the most important thing in my life.

“The thought of mothers not being able to look after their babies because they were too poor was scary so I decided to do something to help.

“This is a way for people to raise money by socialising and having fun.”

There is one event every month and the project has been running for two months.

During that time more than £200 has been raised for charities including SOS Children’s Villages, Save the Children, NSPCC, and Unicef.

The dance teacher said: “I have had some really good feedback from the people who attended.

“They said they feel a little intimidated but also inspired by how good some of the dancers are.

“Everyone is welcome to come along to our events, from absolute beginners to people who’ve been doing it a while.”

The next charity social will be held on July 13 to raise money for Plan UK.
