Wood Green Central Library will be closed later this week as part of an £80,000 refurbishment that will “transform the building”.

Painting and decorating, new flooring and a deep clean are among the improvements that started at the High Road library this week.

The building will be closed on Thursday and Friday to allow the deep clean to take place, but all services and opening times will remain as normal while the work, which is due to be completed in April, is carried out.

Haringey Council says it will be introducing more books, better access to computers and a revamped business lounge later this year.

Wood Green Central is London’s seventh and the UK’s 17th busiest library, with more than 611,000 visits across 2012 and 2013.

Haringey Council’s cabinet member for communities, Councillor Richard Watson, said: “I’m delighted we are investing in these high quality refurbishments, which are just the beginning of improvements that will make a real difference to Wood Green Central Library.

“Wood Green is a bustling hub of activity for people from communities across the borough. The library is an important landmark in the heart of the high street.

“This makeover marks a fantastic start and I look forward to seeing the results.”
