A man accused of killing a police officer during the 1985 Broadwater Farm riots is due to stand trial today.

Nicholas Jacobs, 45, of Hackney, will appear at the Old Bailey after pleading guilty to the murder of PC Keith Blakelock in November last year.

The 40-year-old Metropolitan Police officer was stabbed as he tried to protect firefighters during unrest in Tottenham.

PC Blakelock and his colleague PC Richard Coombes were attacked on 6 October 1985.

Rioting had been sparked by the death of Cynthia Jarrett, who collapsed and died during a police raid on her home.
