Betting firm Paddy Power has applied to open a new branch in Wood Green despite widespread political protests over the number of gambling shops in the borough.

The Irish bookies wants to open a new store at 606 Lordship Lane and will have its application assessed by licensing committee members at Haringey Council on Tuesday.

Neighbours have sent in numerous letters of objection to the application, and Haringey Council has already proposed a number of licence conditions to be enforced if permission is granted next week.

The local authority recently became one of several councils to sign up to a campaign aimed at halting the spread of betting shops in town centres.

Tottenham MP David Lammy has also been an outspoken critic of the businesses, of which there are 38 in Tottenham alone, claiming they have “saturated Tottenham’s once vibrant high streets”.
