Shoppers turned out in droves to splash their cash as part of a “cash mob” aimed at supporting independent traders.

We Love Myddleton Road Group encouraged people to go to Myddleton Road armed with a £10 note to spend in the shop of their choice.

Toby Nation, a representative of the group and a resident of nearby Marlborough Road, said: “The overall aim is to create a better future for this road. It’s an amazing high street in a great residential area, but the road and its shops need a bit of love and attention.

“It’s a hidden gem and we want to do anything we can to protect and support it, so by holding a cash mob it encourages people to put their money where their mouth is and go out and hopefully make a difference.”

A group of around 60 shoppers waved their £10 notes excitedly in the air before descending on the shops in the street.

Julie Freeman was among those eager to spend her cash. She said: “This is a great way of really helping the area you live in. It’s also a great chance for people like me to discover new shops I may not have realised were here.

“We really want Myddleton Road to survive and thrive.”

Shopkeepers were also pleased to see the high street filled with happy shoppers.

Tsegay Tekle, who has part-owned Red Sea Supermarket for 14 years, said: “I think the cash mob is a great idea because it means more support for our businesses.

“There is so much on offer here - people can get up to 95 per cent of their shopping without leaving the area.

“Seeing so many people here today makes me really happy and gives me a lot of confidence.”

Dee Kushlick-Williams, chairman of Bowes Park Community Association, also turned out to show her support on behalf of the association.

She said: “It’s a really exciting project and it’s really great to see so many young people getting involved in the local community.”
