A Tottenham group has set out to reduce the stigma surrounding people with mental health issues with a new campaign.
The Haringey User Network hopes to send volunteers with experience of mental illness to talk to employers and members of the public about the realities of living with a mental illness.
Project co-ordinator Nuala Kiely said: “The stigma of mental health is still a very big problem, and it’s stopping people from coming forward to get help and it’s stopping people from properly integrating into the community. It’s also often very hard for people with mental health problems to find jobs.”
The organisation is currently looking for volunteers who are willing to tell their story and debunk the myths surrounding mental illness.
All volunteers will receive training and support, and will be expected to commit three hours a month.
Potential volunteers should call Nuala Kiely of the Haringey User Network on 0208 8859332.
