Nominations are now open for an awards ceremony that recognises the hard work and dedication of Haringey’s volunteer carers.

The eighth annual Carer of the Year awards, run by Haringey Council, applauds the tireless and often unnoticed work of the borough’s estimated 16,000 volunteers.

Last year’s winners included 18-year-old Tottenham carer George Onofrei, whose mother Gabriela was diagnosed with terminal cancer whilst pregnant with her third child.

George’s incredible commitment in juggling his college studies with taking his three-year-old brother to nursery and learning to feed – and change the nappies of – his newborn brother earned him the Outstanding Achievement Award.

Councillor Peter Morton, cabinet member for health and wellbeing, said: “From West Green to Fortis Green, the tireless work of thousands of carers across Haringey makes a real difference to people's lives.

“The Carer of the Year Awards are a great opportunity for residents to celebrate the unsung heroes in their community. It's time for all of us to recognise Haringey carers' commitment and dedication, so get your nominations in now.”

The appeal for nominations has been made during Carer’s Week, which runs until Sunday, during which hundreds of carers have been taking part in council-organised respite activities.

Entries for the Carer of the Year Awards close on Friday, September 15, with this year’s winners announced at a ceremony on Thursday, September 18.
