A fraudster who stole more than £150,000 from a top London art gallery to pay off gambling debts has today been jailed.
Daniel Edgley, 38, of Cornwall Road, Tottenham, stole money from ticket sales at the Courtauld Gallery between 2010 and 2013.
Prosecuting barrister Peter Zinner said that Edgley’s method, which involved secretly voiding ticket sales then pocketing the customer’s money, was “devious”.
Edgley was caught when a temporary member of staff reported him for “doing strange things with the till” in 2013.
He was then monitored on CCTV by his bosses.
Rebecca Nieto, the barrister representing Edgley, said he was “extremely sorry” and suffered from a gambling addiction.
The court heard Edgley, who admitted one count of fraud, does not have the means to pay the gallery back.
He was sentenced to three years in prison at Southwark Crown Court.
