Boris Johnson will stand as an MP for the Conservative Party in the next general election while continuing his role as the Mayor of London.

Speaking at an event where he gave a speech on EU policy, he admitted he could “no longer endlessly dodge questions” over whether he had plans to stand.

He said: “Let me put it this way, I haven’t got any particular seat lined up but I do think that in all probability, I will try and find somewhere to stand.

“It’s highly likely I will be unsuccessful in that venture, by the way, and you should never underestimate the possibility of things going badly wrong.

“One thing absolutely clear is I will serve out my mandate here in London.”

A seat is available in London ward Uxbridge and South Ruislip after Conservative MP Sir John Randall announced he will be stepping down.

And in neighbouring Hertsmere, Conservative MP James Clappison has also announced he will be leaving Westminster.
