Primary school children proudly unveiled a stained-glass window designed in partnership with a professional artist.

Children at Lea Valley Primary School worked with Yorgos Papadopoulous to make the artwork for the new wing of their school.

Headteacher Maria Kokotsis said: “We were having this new entrance and I thought we needed an artwork that would reflect our excellent school.”

Mr Papadopoulous, who created the stained glass window in response to paper designs from the school pupils, said he had been working on the piece for about a month and a half.

His first mission, when arriving at the school, was to inspire the children by taking them to see the Henri Matisse exhibition at the Tate Modern.

Melissa Aslan, aged 9, said her favourite part of the project had been working as a team.

She said: “We had a lot of fun cutting different shapes and trying out different colours. I loved it.”

Tia Taylor, aged 7, said she had most enjoyed looking at the different kinds of art. She added: “I really liked the Matisse exhibition, and seeing how he made his pictures just by cutting up bits of paper”.

Ali Yumakci, aged 10, agreed with Tia and said he had also enjoyed the Matisse exhibition, adding: “I think he was really creative, making things just out of cut up paper.”
