A former News of the World news editor has today admitted plotting to hack phones in the pursuit of stories.

Ian Edmondson, 45, who lives in Raynes Park, admitted one charge of conspiring to intercept voicemails at the Old Bailey today.

He admitted conspiring with colleagues and private detective Glenn Mulcaire, from Sutton, to intercept the private messages of a host of celebrities, politicians, sports stars and members of the royal family between October 3, 2000 and August 9, 2006.

He was charged with the paper’s former editor Andy Coulson and with hacker Glen Mulcaire, the paper’s former royal editor Clive Goodman, its former news executives Greg Miskiw, Neville Thurlbeck and James Weatherup and the paper’s former feature writer Dan Evans.

Edmondson was one of the eight defendants at the Old Bailey trial but was deemed unfit to continue.

He was finally deemed fit to stand trial in July.

Edmondson will be sentenced in November.
