A daughter is holding a coffee morning in honour of her mother and friend who died from cancer.

Julie Jacob, of Stonebridge Road, Tottenham, lost her mother to ovarian cancer eight years ago but hopes the event will raise awareness about the disease.

The event will also honour Ms Jacob’s friend, Victor George Dehaney, 70, from Hornsey, who died last year.

Macmillan’s World Biggest Coffee Morning is a national event run by the charity, which helped the 54-year-old and her sister through their mother’s disease.

Ms Jacob said: “Cancer is still a taboo subject and people need to check themselves regularly for symptoms, I want this event to show that there are people in the community that are trying to make a difference.

“People think of Tottenham and they associate it with drug dealing, mugging and young boys hanging about on street corner, there is an element of that and there’s no smoke without fire, but our community is trying to change that.”

Ms Jacobs is now a keen supporter of the work Macmillan does and wants to help raise money for further research to beat the disease.

She is also keen to make people more body conscious and to change the ‘status quo’ of Tottenham.

Ms Jacob said: “My mum lost her battle to cancer eight years ago and this event is a way to fight back and raise awareness to the fact that this disease is ravishing people.”

This will be Ms Jacob’s fifth coffee event and she hopes a minimum of 100 people will attend, including Labour MP David Lammy and Councillor Sheila Peacock.

Ms Jacobs said: “It was important that the MPs were invited because they are leaders of the community and represent us, they were elected so I am hoping they will speak up for the campaign and raise awareness.”

People will also have the chance to be pampered at the event and make-up artists and beauty therapists will be on hand to give out makeovers.

Ms Jacobs said: “I want people to feel good about themselves and cosmetics can sometimes feel like an armour and can help cancer-sufferers because they don’t have to worry about their appearance or talk about their symptoms”.

The event will be held on Friday, September 25 from 11am to 5pm at Tottenham Green Leisure Centre.
