A drug dealer had to be pepper sprayed by the police when he tried to escape from a drug raid.

Daniel Henry, of Awlfield Avenue, Tottenham, threw heroin and cocaine over a fence as he made his getaway through the garden of the ground floor flat in Elderbek Close, Cheshunt.

But the 19-year-old was arrested after an officer used the PAVA incapacitant spray. Digital scales, a mobile phone and cash were found on him, St Albans crown court was told Thursday.

Prosecutor Isabel Delamere said that, in all, 39.77g of heroin, 6.4g of cocaine and 0.56g of cannabis were recovered. The street value of the drugs was £4,575 and he had £344.42 on him.

Henry, of Awlfield Avenue, Tottenham, pleaded guilty to possessing heroin and cocaine with intent to supply and possessing cocaine. He had a previous conviction for possessing cocaine.

Philip Volley, defending, said the proceeds from his dealing had gone towards family bills, not a lavish lifestyle.

He said he worked part time at IKEA earning £8.50 an hour but had a place at West London University to study electrical engineering.

"He is extremely remorseful. He admits it was incredibly foolish and is terrified of going to prison," said his barrister.

Judge Andrew Bright QC sentenced him to 21 months. He told him: "Those who deal in drugs must pay the price. You are a young man with talent and ability and it is a great shame you have damaged your prospects by dealing drugs. I hope you have learned your lesson and will get your life back on track."
