More than 1,000 bookworms have received awards for their reading skills.

Pupils across Haringey took part in this year’s Summer Reading Challenge, to read as many books as possible over the long break.

The theme of this year’s reading challenge was ‘Record Breakers’, with the children reading about those who have achieved great things.

Haringey Council cabinet member for resources and culture Cllr Jason Arthur said: “It was great to see so many children sign up for the reading challenge at their local library and take part with such enthusiasm.

“The challenge is just one of several activities on offer at our fantastic libraries aimed at capturing children’s imaginations and ensuring they have lots of opportunities to get stuck into a good book.”

The challenge of reading six or more books during the holidays was accomplished by 1,457 children.

They collected certificates and medals during a celebration at Wood Green Library last week.
