With about 5,000 places to eat in London and more opening every week we are definitely spoilt for choice.

All this month London Restaurant Festival has been celebrating the wonderful cuisine of our capital with special menus and events.

When it comes to the crème de la crème of chefs Albert Roux and his son Michel Roux Jnr are both up there with the greatest in the world, so when they joined forces in 2011 to open Roux at the Landau the city took notice.

For the festival Michel was invited to create a meal 'Inspired by London' and he says: "London's vibrant restaurant scene is so inspiring and competition means the bar is always being raised. The silhouette and the skyline of the city is ever changing, mixing classical with modern."

His four-course menu began with a lovely amuse bouche of cod mousse.

Next up was a smoked salmon paupiette (to you and me that's a piece of meat or fish, beaten thin, and rolled with a stuffing of vegetables, fruits or sweetmeats) with pickled cucumber and a London gin dressing. This was possibly my favourite course. It was so light and refreshing.

The second course was a pretty little dish of sea bass with tiny cubes of ells, crispy bacon and a frothy horseradish cream.

Just as we were tucking into it the man himself appeared from the kitchen to meet and greet the diners. Taking time to pose for photographs, autographs, compliments and questions.

He lists his favourite London restaurants as Zuma in Knightsbridge, Fung Shin in Soho, Chez Bruce in Wandsworth Common, The Manor in Clapham and The Windmill on Clapham Common.

Usually after two course I'd be feeling quite full but the portion sizes were perfect and had whetted my appetite for the main course - fall-apart tender ale braised beef shin with the creamiest of creamed potato, onion tart and a rich jus.

My least favourite dish was the queen of puddings as, although it was expertly made and topped with delicious golden tipped meringue, I found the berries too tart for my tastebuds.

Everyone loves surprises and just when we thought it was all over the waitress brought us these miniature eclairs which were popped straight into our mouths whole and were heaven, utter heaven.
