New dedicated sports courts have opened three months late and after hundreds of thousands of pounds were spent on refurbishment.

The ball courts at Finsbury Park have been revamped as part of a £200,000 refurbishment.

The new-look courts now feature eight basketball hoops, a badminton court, three volleyball courts, two netball courts and outdoor table tennis tables.

They were opened last Wednesday after months of building work. They were initially scheduled to open on August 10 after work began on June 1.

Haringey Council Cabinet Member for Environment Cllr Stuart McNamara said: “We’re delighted to open the new ball courts, which allow park visitors free access to space and equipment for a range of sports.

“It has taken a bit longer than expected to finish the refurbishment so we’re grateful to all park users for bearing with us and would encourage people to come down and try out the new courts for themselves.”

The improvements were funded through income from holding events in the park, such as the Wireless Music Festival which proved controversial with some residents for causing noisy disturbance.

Pupils from Greig City Academy were the first players to take to the new courts, when they joined the council, Friends of Finsbury Park and other park users at the official opening.
