A transplant survivor from Haringey has won a national award at a ceremony held in Westminster this week.

Pavlos Mastiki won the award for Patient Champion of the Year, at the annual Anthony Nolan Supporter Awards.

Mr Mastiki said he has supported cancer charity Anthony Nolan since 2010, when he received a stem cell transplant after battling lymphoma for two years.

In July 2014 he joined their patient and families panel so he could help others in his situation, giving up his time despite living with the effects of his illness and transplant.

Mr Mastiki said: “This award feels like a major milestone in my journey through cancer. It hopefully shows that I have been able to help others in a similar situation and that this has been recognised.

“Thank you for the award, and thank you for enabling me to give something back to the cancer community."

Anthony Nolan has recognised his efforts because of the “outstanding dedication” he has shown to supporting others with blood cancer and blood disorders.

Henny Braund, chief executive at Anthony Nolan, said: “Pavlos is a hugely deserving winner of this award; his extraordinary support and passion for our lifesaving work epitomises the ethos of our charity, which is built on one person directly helping another.

“I continue to find myself inspired and humbled by the dedication of supporters like Pavlos, who have gone above and beyond in their commitment to the charity. By supporting our work, Pavlos has played a vital part in giving 1,200 people this year a second chance of life.”

Mr Mastiki volunteers his time to help Anthony Nolan produce information and pamphlets by sharing experiences from a patient perspective, discussing his experiences of fatigue for their patient booklet.

The Anthony Nolan Supporter Awards are in their third year, celebrating supporters of the charity.

Mr Mastiki was joined by campaigners, fundraisers, volunteers, MPs, lifesaving stem cell donors and celebrities including TOWIE’s Bobby Norris and EastEnders actress Kellie Shirley at the ceremony.
