Pupils spent a day in a life as a journalist when they visited a national newspaper's offices.

Children from Coleridge Primary School, in Crouch End Hill, spent the day at The Guardian newspaper offices.

The Year 5 and 6 pupils, who write for their school's termly newspaper, The Coleridge, developed their writing and researching skills on Wednesday, November 18.

The day involved editing and formatting their very own newspaper front page, as well as watching breaking news on the press wires and writing stories.

After lunch, the students became sub-editors and took on the important role of fact checking articles and looking for mistakes.

They also met a sub-editor at The Guardian named Billy, who helped them come up with interesting and inventive headlines to complete the stories they had been writing all day.

David Ashworth, a teacher at Coleridge Primary School who is involved in the school newspaper, said: “The students saw what real life journalism is like behind the scenes and saw first-hand how the story comes into being.”

“They went to a workshop with the people from the Guardian and also learned how to use the templates used in articles.”

“It was a great experience for the children, as they were already interested in writing and researching news stories due to being part of the extra curriculum newspaper club at school.”

“The skills they have learned from this trip will be taken forward into future issues of our own school newspaper, The Coleridge.”
