One of three educational facilities that received poor Ofsted ratings earlier this year has been upgraded to a “Good” standing following an inspection last month.

Haringey Sixth Form College – formerly known as Sixth Form Centre – has been upgraded to the second highest rating possible by the official government schools inspectors.

In the report, Ofsted praised the progress made by students, with high numbers of them going on to university. It also praised the ambition of staff and the governors to raise the college up from previously substandard levels. The College received “Requires Improvement” in its last inspection earlier in 2015.

Rob Thomas, principal of the college, said: “The college has undergone a remarkable transformation over the last year.  I have asked a lot of the staff and students and they haven’t let me down.

“We have a new senior and middle leadership team who have promoted a culture of high expectation.  Our key drivers are success, ambition, and resilience, and everyone stands behind these.

“We are all, understandably, over the moon but not complacent; we want our 2016 results to demonstrate that we are outstanding.”

In its report, based on an inspection conducted between October 13 and 15, Ofsted found that the college provided a good quality of teaching, personal development, student behaviour and outcomes after learning. It was only found to require improvement in one broad area, providing for learners with high needs.

The report said: “Students enjoy their learning and make good and in many cases exceptional progress.  A high number of students gain places at university.

"Governors, along with senior leaders, are highly ambitions for the future of the college and all its students with a stated aim of becoming an outstanding provider.”

It also said that the college had fallen short of the top ‘Outstanding’ ranking because not enough students were encouraged to take on work experience, and that results in GCSE Mathematics still required some further improvement.

It was, however, full of praise for a college that just months prior had been found to require improvement in many areas.

Cllr Ann Waters, Haringey Council cabinet member for children and families said: “I’m absolutely delighted that Haringey’s Sixth Form Centre has achieved a ‘good’ rating in their recent Ofsted inspection.

"Huge credit must go to the school’s teachers, governors, support staff and students whose hard work, dedication and leadership has made this achievement possible”

Earlham Primary School, St. John Vianney RC Primary School and Haringey Sixth Form Centre all received a “Requires Improvement” rating in earlier 2015 inspections.
