A school was visited by an MP as part of their LGBT History Month celebrations.
Caroline Dinenage, MP for Equalities, visited Woodside High School, of White Hart Lane, on February 3, to take part in a variety of events that marked the first week of LGBT History Month.
A student-led Equalities Group took part in a discussion with Ms Dinenage during the visit to explore the impact of homophobic and transphobic bullying and why schools must challenge it.
The LGBT community group, Diversity Role Models, also spoke to the students about their own lives and experiences.
Ms Dinenage said, “Woodside High School is doing some great work on equality and diversity and the student-led Equalities Group is truly inspiring.”
Savannah Irving, 15, said: “It is really important that schools treat homophobia just as seriously as other forms of prejudice and discrimination such as racism and sexism.
“No student should feel unsafe or not welcome in a school simply because of their sexuality. We believe that everyone has the right to be themselves and that diversity is something that should be celebrated.”
The school will continue to teach about LGBT History Month throughout February, with visits from high profile LGBT speakers and other student-led workshops for young people and staff.
