Strikes from Ryan Mason and Erik Lamela along with an own goal put Tottenham Hotspur into the last 16 of the Europa League with victory over a disappointing Fiorentina.

Third in Serie A, the Florence side’s nickname is ‘La Viola’, and it was their fans that were particularly musical in the opening period as they made the majority of noise. The game itself was staccato at times, but it was Spurs who eventually found their tune in a deserved win.

Spurs played Nacer Chadli as the focal point of a 4-3-3 with Kane out of the squad, and it was clear instantly that the full backs had right to roam as Christian Eriksen and Erik Lamela looked to cut in from wide.

The hosts had chances in the opening 20 minutes, with Dele Alli just failing to connect with an Alderweireld flick on and Christian Eriksen stinging the palms of Fiorentina keeper Ciprian Tatarusanu from fully 30 yards. It took a moment of luck, however, to get the deserved breakthrough.

The referee played advantage after a foul on Chadli, with the ball breaking perfectly on the left of the area for the onrushing Ryan Mason, who tucked it beyond Tatasuranu’s left hand from 12 yards with a finish as cool as the February night.

Fiorentina boss Paolo Sousa once managed QPR for an unhappy six-month spell, and he had no more luck in London tonight. When his team had a rare attack their final ball was often wasteful.

One man who was never wasteful was Alli, who represented the most sparky and dangerous attacking threat. On 54 minutes he picked up and shot from 25 yards, his effort just being deflected wide. His only blot was a yellow card for diving in the 77th minute.

The only surprise was when Spurs did get a second, the young England international was not involved. Chadli’s curling effort from the left edge of the box was palmed by Tatarusanu into the middle of the area. With Fiorentina’s defence creaking, Lamela turned and shot home from 10 yards.

The quality of Alli’s performance was fully reflected when he was replaced with seven minutes to go by Nabil Bentaleb, and got a huge standing ovation from all four sides of White Hart Lane.

With 10 minutes to go, Spurs confirmed their progress with an own goal. The impressive Trippier put a delicious cross along the six yard line, and Fiorentina captain Gonzalo Rodriguez completed the scoring on Spurs’ behalf, via the crossbar.

Spurs could easily have had a fourth, with Mason - in his final action before being replaced by Harry Winks in the 86th minute – forcing the keeper into a fingertip save with a volley from well outside the area.

On a day Tottenham Hotspur gained approval for their new £400million, 61,000-seater stadium and complex from the Mayor of London, it was cause for celebration on and off the pitch.
