STANDING up on a crowded tube is twice as expensive as a luxury flight to New York.

Figures show a peak journey from zone four to zone one (central London), which is around seven miles, costs £3.90 and a return journey is £7.80 – 63p per mile.

Meanwhile the cheapest return for a first class flight from Heathrow to JFK from May 6 to May 12 is £2,199.55p.

And at 6,904 miles, the journey costs just 32p per mile.

Labour mayoral candidate Sadiq Khan said it showed Londoners have to pay “ludicrously expensive” fares.

In his manifesto, he pledged to freeze Transport for London (TfL)’s fares for four years, but has not explained how he will pay for this.

He said: “Zac Goldsmith has confirmed that he will increase Londoners fares by 17 per cent.

“If he gets his way then a Tube journey could end up costing more per mile than taking a private jet around the world.”

Josh Grimstone, a spokesman for Zac Goldsmith said: "Khan’s £1.9 billion black hole would cut vital transport investment and mean even more trains to and from Enfield borough are overcrowded and late.

"Zac’s Action Plan for Greater London will improve services and means that when a train pulls into the station you can actually get on it."
