CONCERNED parents met with the Green Party candidate for Mayor of London to discuss “shocking” levels of pollution near a primary school.

Sian Berry visited Muswell Hill Primary School on March 24 after members from Haringey Green Party installed test tubes around 40 areas around the borough earlier this year.

The results, which were analysed by Network for Clean Air, in Oxford, showed levels of 64 micrograms per cubic meter in the air, despite the EU legal limit being only 40.

Melanie Ashbrook feels “worried” about the impact pollution will have on her two children, who attend the school.

She said: “As a parent of three children living in London I have been very worried for many years about the level of vehicle pollution that my family is exposed to on a daily basis.”

Louise Domleo, a mother of two pupils at the school, would like to see trees being planted to act as a shield against pollution in the air.

She said: “If all London buses and cabs had to convert to a greener energy source, there would surely be a significant reduction in harmful emissions to the safer levels that all our kids across the capital deserve.

“I would also love to see as many trees as possible planted to buffer the rest of the air pollution.”

Ms Berry believes getting rid of the most polluting cars, vans and lorries from the roads in favour of zero-emissions buses and taxis will help cut down on pollution levels across London.

She said: “Providing at least 25 000 electric charging points across London will help the switch to low emission vehicles, but improving the public transport system, cutting fares - especially in zones 3 and beyond - will also make a significant contribution.”
