VULNERABLE people could be put at risk if rumours about a cabinet reshuffle are true, say campaigners.
Sources say Cllr Jason Arthur, who has been in charge of resources and culture for the last year, could add health and wellbeing to his portfolio, replacing Cllr Peter Morton.
Haringey Council refused to confirm whether this was true when quiz by the Tottenham Independent.
But Mary Langan, a member of Save Autism Services, says this “lacks respects” and fears vital services as one person juggles two positions.
Ms Langan, who cares for her autistic son James, 23, fears vulnerable people with disabilities and the elderly will suffer if the decision will go ahead.
She said: “This is very worrying news, as adult social care is going through the biggest cuts in the council.
“Cllr Morton was supposed to be in charge of delivering a new model of social care over the next year.
"This is a major project, with consequences for the most vulnerable people in the community and it should be a top priority for the council.”
Ms Langan believes that the project of “transforming” social care requires the leadership of a senior member of the council, rather than being added to another cabinet member’s brief.
She said: “How can anyone do this job properly as well as taking on another major cabinet responsibility?
“It is as if the Chancellor the Exchequer was also put in charge of the national health service.
"If the cabinet member responsible for social care is also responsible for pushing through budget cuts, how can we expect him to stand up for vital care services?
“My fear is that the status of adult social care is being downgraded further and that more cuts and closures will be the result.”
