A shop has been fined after food safety standards were “completely ignored”.
Enfield Halal Meat Centre, in High Street, has been fined £1,550 after inspections found dirty surfaces, dead flies, a filthy wash basin, and rubbish left in the open air outside the shop.
Owner Aslam Niazi, of Banton Close, Enfield, pleaded guilty to five breaches of food safety and hygiene regulations at Tottenham Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, August 11.
Enfield Council said they found multiple failings during a visit on November 11, including damaged floor tiles placed in the food chiller, dead flies on the floor, and a dirty, leaking hand basin.
Cabinet member for environment, Cllr Daniel Anderson, said: “Outlets which serve food to the public need to comply with certain basic standards. In this case those basic standards were completely ignored and we had no choice other than to prosecute.
"Our first priority is for the welfare of our citizens, not least protecting them from buying food in filthy shops. This prosecution, therefore, sends out a strong message that we will not tolerate lax standards of hygiene in this borough.”
