The first time I heard them I was mesmerised. It was a night of indie bands at the Camden Assembly on Chalk Farm Road and I was expecting a mix of punk and Brit pop, not a sensual cinematic sound.

With dreamlike singing and anthemic accompaniment from the band, inspiration from the likes of Cocteau Twins, Anna Calvi, Pixies, Mitski and Lana Del Rey resonates from their music.

Moonlands is made up of Ayumi Konno, synth and vocals, Joel Frosh, guitar, Buster Stonham, bass, Joel Brooks on drums and the leading lady Lucy Elliott both singing and playing guitar.

Tottenham Independent:

Joel F describes their sound: “We play music that draws on a range of different influences, creating a big atmospheric sound, with jangly guitars and catchy vocal hooks.

“We write all of our music collectively, with Lucy taking care of the lyrics. We don’t really have a formula for writing our songs; sometimes we’ll come in with a guitar part or a chorus line, other times ideas will arise through jamming in practice.”

I wondered how they deal with creative disagreements and he assured me it was with “a fight to the death”.

This Saturday they will launch their debut EP at The Finsbury pub in Manor House, with support from Big Boy Tomato, Zeigler Co. and Devil Say Dance.

“We were really keen for the new EP to represent how we sound live” Joel F tells me.

“We recorded in a freezing cold barn in Battle with producer Martin Ruffin, which was definitely a different experience to our previous recordings.

“The EP title is just Moonlands - took a while to come up with but got there in the end.”

The EP will be available from Friday, January 27 from foofrecords.com
