PLANS to improve the M25 will cause traffic to reach “boiling point” unless a new slip road is built, it has been claimed.

Highways England has announced ambitious proposals to make changes to at the A10 Junction of the M25 – including creating extra lanes on the roundabout and widening the southbound approach.

But Enfield Council say a wider problem needs to be addressed first and are calling for the Northern Gateway Access Project (NGAP) to be considered.

Cllr Alan Sitkin, who is responsible for economic regeneration, said: “We accept and understand work needs to be done but this can only make things worse.

“This cannot be considered in isolation as current evidence suggests that this will simply aggravate queues and delays in Enfield, particularly on the already heavily congested A10 and A1055.

“Improving that roundabout is good but not enough has been done to address the underlying problem which is ongoing. They’ve not solved this issue and I’m worried.

“Traffic is bad right now – so what’s it going to be like when the work is carried out? It’s going to make things terrible. It will go from terrible to impossible.

“It will cause traffic to reach boiling point and create an absolute nightmare.”

The second proposal also involves creating extra lanes on the roundabout and widening the A10 southbound, but could also provide a free-flow left turn.

The authority has long campaigned the NGAP to be built from Mollison Avenue to the M25, to ease traffic along Bullsmoor Lane.

Cllr Sitkin added: “We’re keen to continue to work with Highways England to determine a comprehensive and coordinated approach to network improvements in the region through the NGAP project.

“Given the substantial increase of traffic expected both in Enfield and many of its neighbours over the coming years, we must work together towards developing a more robust strategy to ensure that the isolated benefits of the proposed J25 improvements are mutually compatible with the wider economic aspiration for the region.”
