CHILDREN designed their own festival-themed artwork as part of a competition.
Enfield Council worked with Barnet and Southgate College to run a competition for all Year 5 and 6 pupils who go to an Enfield primary school.
The Mayor's Award for Visual Arts celebration evening was held last Thursday at the college, where all the young aartists and their families were given certificates and awards from Cllr Patricia EEkechi.
here were six shortlisted pieces of artwork from each year group, 12 pieces of art work in total. An exhibition, which is open to all staff and the public of all the shortlisted artwork will be on display at Barnet and Southgate College’s Southgate Campus until May 5.
Alyson Cook, creative arts curriculum manager from Barnet and Southgate College said: “The standard of the entries from all the primary schools was truly outstanding and we were really impressed with the techniques and use of colour. This year there were 33 entries from 12 Enfield primary schools and it was a difficult task to choose the final winners. We’ve really enjoyed working with the children and hope the awards go from strength to strength in the future.”
Gwyneth Hamand, learning consultant for enrichment and progression from Enfield Council said: “We have been delighted with the success of the Mayor’s Award for Visual Arts this year. Barnet and Southgate College have done a great job running the training for teachers and supporting the competition. That has resulted in a high level of buy in from Enfield Primary Schools and the really high quality of art work from Enfield’s young artists.”
As an additional prize, all of the shortlisted art work will be printed onto large hoardings outside Chase Farm Hospital as part of their buildings’ re-development, courtesy of Vinci Construction. The artwork on the hoardings will be unveiled sometime in May 2017.
