Neighbours of a man accused of ploughing into worshippers in front of Finsbury Park Mosque say "he hasn't had a bad life."
Dad-of-four Darren Osborne reportedly veered into a group of Muslims outside the Muslim Welfare Centre early on Monday.
The 47-year-old has been arrested on suspicion of "the commission, preparation or instigation of terrorism including murder and attempted murder”.
His mother Christine confirmed her son had been arrested over the alleged attack.
She said: "It's my son, I can confirm that.
"At the moment I can't say anything. That's all I will say."
Neighbours described the grandmother as "long-suffering' and one said: "Christine is a great grandmother - Darren's nephew stays a lot.
"Darren's not had a bad life.
"He's had quite a privileged life. He's had more options than a lot of people."
A woman in his hometown, who did not wish-to-be named, said: "We all know Darren, from our youth generally.
"When I heard what happened it absolutely made me feel ill.
"Weston is a small town. He left years ago I believe.
"He has opened a can of worms.
"We are all devastated honestly. It's a small place."
