A charity which tackles the lasting effects of alcoholism want to open a coffee-making training centre to help people heal.

Haringey Advisory Group on Alcohol (HAGA) hope to train homeless, drug-dependent, alcohol addicted and people suffering from mental health issues, so they may be able to find employment in the hospitality industries.

By building up expertise and confidence at the proposed Shine Café in Turnpike Lane, Wood Green, centre manager Angus Barry aims to create a community hub where people benefit from regular accessible courses.

Mr Barry, said: “Working in collaboration with Café Art, we have launched a fundraising campaign enabling donors to support us in bringing the Shine Café to life, establishing a space that serves quality coffee and food and offers local people the opportunity to gain barista and café management skills."

The centre was opened in 2016 and runs run low cost daily wellbeing sessions and provide space for local artists and exhibitions.

HAGA plan to make the building easy to use for people with disabilities, to purchase café and training equipment, to install a professional coffee making machine and host regular courses for at-risk community members.

A pledge of £5 or more would mean a free coffee; £25 or more would lead to an invitation to the official café launch in Autumn 2017; £100 or more would mean the donor’s name is added to the organisation’s Supporters plaque; and, over £500 would mean that a donor could rent out the new coffee space for a business gathering for free.
