The keys have been handed over to a new group of volunteers who will manage a sports centre after the previous committee members retired.

The Enfield Drill Hall in Oak Park Avenue welcomed the 10 volunteers at an official handover on Friday September 1.

Upon their retirement, chairman Alan Hayes, treasurer David Southon and secretary Simon Gouldstone were praised for successfully running the centre for the past 20 years.

The Free Tudor-style building built in 1901 is listed in the Enfield Local Heritage List and was once the heart of the volunteer reserve unit.

Since the formation of the Territorial Force in 1908, the hall served as a training establishment, administration centre and social club to generations of Territorial soldiers.

Built for the Enfield Company of the 1st Volunteer Battalion of the Middlesex Regiment during the First World War it became the drill station for F Company 7th Battalion Duke of Cambridge’s Own (Middlesex Regiment).

During the Second World War it served B Company 7th Battalion.

This drill hall also held trade fairs and social events for the community down through the years and today it has three badminton courts, an archery range and a meeting room.
