Music from the Black Barn, the monthly gig at Forty Hall Farm, is to take a one-off break from tradition by going classical tonight.

For its September evening, to coincide with BBC’s Last Night of the Proms, Farm Night at the Proms features a 45-piece orchestra conducted by Olly Medlicott who has strong connections with the area having grown up in Enfield where he went to school at Latymer and took part in in the Enfield Young Symphony Orchestra for several years.

Now a music teacher, Olly arrived at Colchester Royal Grammar School five-years-ago where there was a choral tradition and brings the school’s famed senior orchestra, which has toured extensively throughout Britain and Europe, back to his Enfield roots.

The programme will include excerpts from West Side Story, Jurassic Park, Carmen as well as all the usual Last Night of the Proms favourites such a Land of Hope and Glory, Rule Britannia, and Jerusalem.

The evening will also include a jazz set from Olly’s sister Flora who also grew up in Enfield and went to Latymer, now back living in the borough. Flora has performed with Emily Dankworth, daughter of Cleo Laine and Johnny Dankworth, and will be fronting her own highly regarded jazz quartet to play all the swinging classics.

“It could actually be the first time I’ve performed on the same bill as my brother since school,” says Flora. “I can’t wait to get on stage in my home town.”

Because of the sheer number of musicians that need to be accommodated, the evening will take place on the site immediately adjacent to the Black Barn, used as the main stage for the annual Livestock rock festival.
