A fundraising target of over £800,000 to build a new North London Samaritans community hub has been achieved.

Work to rebuild crumbling Shaftsbury Hall on Herbert Road, in Bowes Park, affectionately known as Tin Tabernacle, will start on February 26.

People with thoughts of suicide will be able to come to the new operation centre to talk about the causes of their problems.

Other organisations will use the building to host health and well-being activities.

John Pyatt, director of North London Samaritans, said: “After 10 years of fundraising and three planning applications, we are now at the start of an exciting new phase in the 40 plus year history of North London Samaritans.

“The new Shaftesbury Hall Community Hub will guarantee the future of North London Samaritans in the years ahead and provide a wonderful new local space for hire.

“I thank all of our supporters, our volunteers and the many local people who have helped make this happen.

“Our grateful thanks go especially to the Big Lottery which provided the largest share of the money needed for our new hall.

“We also thank other charitable trusts and the local community who have supported this project.”
