In the average UK household, £1,000 worth of clothes haven’t been worn in the last year. These often find their way into landfill.

To combat this and avoid unwanted threads being thrown into a landfill, clothes swapping events will be taking place across North London.

Swish and Style will be coming to Enfield following its success in Camden, Hackney, Haringey, Islington and Waltham Forest.

The community are being invited to refresh their wardrobes for free, whilst learning about the impacts of textile waste.

The first four events have seen nearly 2,000 items brought along and given a new home, rather than ending up in the ground.

Cllr Clyde Loakes, Chair of NLWA said: “An estimated £140 million worth of used clothing goes to landfill in the UK every year. Our swishing events are fun, free and help to reduce the environmental impact of buying new clothing by reducing the amount of old clothes that get thrown away.

By providing the tools and knowledge to help everyone think about reusing textiles in an interesting way we’re hoping local community groups and residents will get excited about swishing, and also to promote the wider reuse of unwanted items.”

As well as picking up new clothes, attendees can take part throughout the day, offering quick repairs and alterations on a first-come, first-served basis. Upcycling workshops will also be available for people to learn how to turn their unwanted accessories into beautiful items.

Drinks and refreshments will be served throughout the event and it is free to attend.

On Saturday 24 February the Swish and Style tour comes to Enfield, taking place at the Enfield Highway Community Centre, 117 Hertford Road, EN3 5JF from 2 - 4.30pm.
